TRAMWAY

NORD have worked in collaboration with one of the UK’s foremost contemporary artists, Toby Paterson, to create the Tramway Theatre’s first permanent artwork.

The site for the artwork is the main doorway into the Tramway 2 gallery, highlighting one of the largest and most versatile visual art spaces in Europe. The work opened as part of Architecture Week in June 2006.

Influenced by British modernism of the 1960s, Paterson’s work stems from an interest in structure and form and their relationship to function within architectural contexts. His work also seeks to address how cultural, societal and economic factors affect our engagement with public spaces.

The structure acts as both backdrop and container for the artwork, held in suspension within the cavity of the door.
