Dunbreac;
the spotted rising ground where heather, bracken, and pasture alternated.
DUMBRECK is a unique site-specific installation that physically maps the
site of the former Dumbreck House. The proposal invites visitors on a journey
through space; light and reflection that registers the conditions of the
Bellahouston Park site both physically and emotionally. This project challenges
the idea of architecture as sculpture through employing the basic elements
of scale and measurement, space and light.
In order to respond to the site context, our approach draws from the existing
elements of Bellahouston Park that constitute its historical and social significance.
It is our intention that the new structures are read as an adaptation and
continuation of the existing landscape elements, as a composition of reconfigured
planting, thresholds and external public spaces.
DUMBRECK is a corruption of the Gaelic word dunbreac, meaning the hill speckled
with daisies, otherwise the spotted rising ground or ridge where heather,
bracken, and pasture alternated.
