SLATER HOUSE

The site consisted of an occupied basement level apartment and an uninhabited sub-basement. The first move was to strip out the basement floor to create a two-storey volume at sub-basement level. A new mezzanine floor was then inserted like a tray into this volume. As the mezzanine was held away from the existing front elevation, with it’s large bay window, light was allowed to flood into the lower level of the apartment creating a surprisingly bright space. The interconnection between the two floors allowed for the young family with two small children the opportunity to cook, eat, play and relax within the same volume.
