Salty Dog Restaurant, Glasgow
Complete
Salty
Dog is a new fish restaurant in Glasgow. The design takes the traditional
continental café typology as the starting point for the project. The
project developed as a series of studies into the formal language and materiality
associated with the type.
In the final design this resolved itself in a palette of materials consisting
of terrazzo, Rosewood veneered plywood, brass detailing and brown vinyl upholstery.
The restaurant instantly acquired the character of a space that had existed
for some time; nothing appears to be new. This notion is reinforced by the
introduction of a series of ‘found’ objects specifically a collection
of etched glass lampshades, a Rosewood drop-leaf dining table and a stuffed
fish. A stencil of the decorative motif from the glass lampshade was enlarged
to occupy the full height of one wall as an over-scaled backdrop to the restaurant.
A range of bespoke brass framed furniture was specifically designed for the
project by NORD and these pieces are situated side by side with chairs sourced
from a modernist dining room.
