Planning
permission has been granted for 10 mews houses on the site of Havelock Garages
in Glasgow’s West End. The garages currently occupy a 100m long site
within the backcourt of large tenemental block. In a poor state of repair
and compromising the amenity space of the tenements it was decided at an
early stage to remove the existing structures while retaining the brick perimeter
boundary wall.
The scheme is designed to sit within the existing outline of the garage building
ensuring maximum light and views for the proposed dwellings and existing residents.
Each unit has parking at ground level with accommodation on two floors above.
The scheme will utilise timber construction and significant off-site prefabrication
to limit disruption.
Formally the challenge was to create a sense of diversity across a long façade
of repetitive housing units. Consequently staggered fenestration blurs the
distinction between each dwelling.

HAVELOCK STREET, GLASGOW
10 NEW-BUILD MEWS HOUSES
Utilising
timber cladding to the façade and matching timber decking
to the elevated private gardens the building is deliberately ‘soft’ in
its external character in contrast to the sandstone of the rear tenement elevations.
The roof is clad in copper.
Work is due to start on site later this year.
