Common
Place is the second in a series of the Scottish Executive’s Architecture
Initiative exhibitions. It opened in March 2003 in the Lighthouse and is
currently touring Scotland. The design won the only award in the small projects
category at the 2003 GIA Awards and most recently was awarded first prize
in the exhibitions category and the Grand Prix award for best piece of design
in any category at the Scottish Design Awards 2004.
The notion of travel and transportation informed the initial design decisions.
The exhibition is conceived of as a series of packing cases that fold open
to reveal illuminated displays. Contained within the cases is a range of high
and low technology display formats including audio visual monitors, architectural
models and aerial mapping devices.
Illuminated text panels and an appropriated bench seating system reference
the ‘common place’ agenda of the exhibition and set the viewer
in an environment that is in someway familiar like background noise or street
furniture that we do not register.
