BORD GAIS NETWORKS – NATIONAL DISTRIBUTION CONTROL BUILDING COMPETITION

Introduction

In April 2008 the RIAI (Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland) ran an open competition on behalf of Bord Gais Networks (BGN) for the architectural design of a new distribution control centre at Dubber Cross, Dublin.

Bord Gáis Networks (BGN), a division of Bord Gáis, is responsible for the maintenance and operations of the gas network in Ireland. The services provided include safety and emergency response, pipeline service laying and modification, and meter installations and alterations.

Concept
The concept for the proposal draws inspiration from the specific function of the building as a centre of distribution control for Bord Gais Networks. The function has led us to think of the building as a place where the collective endeavour is towards the coordination of an infrastructure and workforce spread widely across the country.

We believe buildings have the potential to express the identity of it’s user and the question of appropriate image is central to our proposal. Consequently the building form and image expresses robustness, precision and efficiency. And yet at the same time it appears loose, responsive and inclusive.
